    The Importance of Strength Training

One of the most important keys to developing into a complete player is softball specific strength training. This training impacts their performance and steps their game up to a whole new level. To play at elite athletes have to get faster, to get stronger, and to stay healthy; without solid strength and conditioning program run by a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, these are not possible. We asked a few of our Power Line families to discuss their experience since adding weekly workouts into their program and the results are inspiring. Below is a quote from Art Schiele on behalf of Livy Schiele who as a ninth grader is verbally committed to Auburn University. To read more testimonies from our Power Line families regarding the huge improvements in the athletes, click here.

"As a coach and the father of an athlete I know the importance of developing speed and strength.  I have seen the transformation in many athletes.  If you’re a good athlete you can become a great athlete.  If you’re a great athlete you can become exceptional!  I’ve seen this transformation in my own daughter while she’s been working with Melissa at Power Line.  The benefits have included big gains in speed and strength but more importantly injury prevention. Melissa charted her over the course of a year and her measurables show an unbelievable jump. On 11/2/12 she had a 14 inch vertical, 6’5” broad jump and a 4.99 pro-agility.  Just 1 year later on 10/14/13 she had a 19 inch vertical, 7’4” broad jump, 4.48 pro-agility.  As a freshman at The Bishop’s School Livy broke school records for pro-agility and the 40 yard sprint. These numbers are a testament to the program run by Melissa and Power Line as well as the hard work put in by the athlete. Any athlete that’s serious about playing at the next level must prepare themselves now in a program like this."

Life in the College Softball World

February's Athlete of the Month is Olivia Oppeltz! Olivia started with the TNL organization three years ago, and is now making quite the name for herself. She began working out at Power Line in 2012, and her hard work is truly pay off. For the month of January Olivia hit .440, and moving into February she continued her growth. In the Triple Crown Presidents Day Showdown Tournament, Olivia finished with a .750 batting average! In one single night she hit three home runs, including a grand slam, which concluded her cycle on the day! At one point during the tournament she was even 11/11! Her athleticism doesn't just show at bat, but on defense as well. She plays both corner positions, allowing zero errors for the month of February. Her father Ken Oppeltz states that, "This truly was her best month ever. Her stats are a result of her hard work on the field, at Power Line, and in the garage where the Tee and Bownet take the place of my car." Congrats on such a successful year so far Olivia. We can't wait to see you continue this year stronger than ever!! If you're interested in getting to know more about Olivia and her accomplishments, click here.

    League and Organizational Development

January's Athlete of the Month is Stavi Augur, one of the most naturally talented athletes we've been fortunate enough to coach.  She started turning heads when she played for North Shore as a young athlete, and now plays for one of the top ranked teams in the country, 14U Power Surge. Stavi is set to impress this year and she's on quite the roll. Her batting average the last month was .575, with a .605 on base percentage. She leads the team in home runs with 6, stolen bases with 15, and RBI's with 28. The great thing about Stavi is that she is an all around outstanding player. Defensively she can play anywhere, and owns every position like it's her starting spot. Her footwork is quick and efficient and her arm is fire. Stavi is in her freshman year at Torrey Pines High School, where we're certain she's going to set records, so make sure you catch a few of her games! Her journey so far has been extremely impressive, and we can't wait to continue to watch her grow as a student athlete. If you're interested in getting to know more about Stavi and her accomplishments, click here.
